As widely anticipated, today's suspension of ferry connections due to adverse weather conditions has pushed the entire flow of travelers onto the already fragile road network of the Amalfi Coast. The result: traffic came to a standstill along the SS163, particularly between Maiori and Amalfi, where it took over 40 minutes to travel just a few kilometers.
Further worsening the situation was the unauthorized presence of a camper, which blatantly violated the existing traffic ban. The vehicle traveled undisturbed until it reached Castiglione di Ravello, where local police intervened, issued a fine, and ordered it to turn back.
Local authorities also fined nine private transfer vehicles (NCCs) for traveling in the wrong direction, a direct violation of Anas Ordinance No. 340/2019, which stipulates a mandatory one-way direction from Positano to Vietri sul Mare for vehicles under 4.00 meters in height, 2.10 meters in width, and 6.00 meters in length.
Additionally, Anas Ordinance No. 337/2019 enforces a complete ban on the circulation of campers and caravans on the SS163 from 6:30 AM to midnight, in both directions, regardless of size. The rule was introduced for safety reasons, given the narrow and winding nature of the road, which is ill-equipped to handle large vehicles without creating dangerous situations and significant delays.
Despite alternating license plate rules being in effect today—allowing only vehicles with even-numbered final digits to drive along the 50-kilometer stretch of the coastal road—traffic congestion remains severe.
As tourism season approaches, local authorities urge all drivers, especially NCC operators, to check regulations before entering the area and to respect all transit bans to avoid fines and contribute to safer travel for everyone.
