Atrani's Christmas Eve is marked by the ethereal "Calata della Stella" (the Christmas star descent)," a venerable tradition that transforms the town into a spectacle of spiritual reflection and communal joy. As the village lights dim, a flare comet gently begins its descent, heralding a burst of light and music that breathes life into the Christmas spirit anew.
This year marks the 144th edition of the event, carrying a profound message of universal hope. It aims to ignite a light for those suffering from human rights abuses and societal marginalization, reinforcing the principles of solidarity, social participation, and care that are the lifeblood of vibrant, peaceful communities.
The event kicks off around midnight, following the sacred celebrations, with a Mass scheduled at 11 PM at the Collegiate Church of St. Maria Maddalena. The night sky will soon sparkle with a masterful fireworks display by Senatore, succeeded by "Dancing under the Star," featuring a saxophone show and DJ set to dance the night away starting at 12:45 AM.
The festivities begin earlier in the day with events catered to children. Following the ancient Novena liturgies that anticipate Christmas, the morning in Umberto I Square will see a traditional "zeppolata" and then a jolly Santa Claus distributing gifts, ensuring a day filled with festive cheer and childlike wonder, setting the stage for the night's dazzling comet.
